An Indian Classical Sitar performer / teacher, Sanjeeb Sircar has a music career of more than thirty years during which he has performed and taught music at many places in India, and also in Europe and the USA.
A pioneer in the field of using the Sitar in authentic Jazz, Christian and Gospel, and other world music forms for more than thirty years, he has successfully managed to maintain the high standards of his Indian Classical Sitar while successfully trying to evolve new, meaningful, creative expressions with other genres of music.
| Born into a musical family, Sanjeeb Sircar started singing and playing musical instruments at the age of six. During school he took an active part in musical activities. On finishing school he joined the music department of the Banares Hindu University completing a diploma course in sitar, where he studied with Dr. Raj Bhan Singh and Dr. K.C. Gangrade. Thereafter he studied with the late Pandit Banwari Lal (1912-2003) at Allahabad and took the degree of Sangeet Praveen (Post-Graduation) in Sitar from the Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad. On relocating to New Delhi, in 1989, he continued his studies of the sitar with the internationally renowned Sitar Maestro, Ustad Shujaat Khan of the Imdadkhani Gharana. He has also attended lecture demonstrations and many live concerts of Sitar Maestro, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Drawing upon his varied sources of learning and while maintaining the traditional norms, his music is marked by subtle diversity, a personal innovative approach, and depth of expression. Sanjeeb has given many successful performances on the sitar since the nineteen seventies at many cities in India, Europe, England and the U.S.A. These include the Cuneo Music Festival, Italy, Florida International University, USA, St Louis, Govindas, USA, London, England, private gathering, Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, Poorva Sanskrit Kendra, New Delhi, Salvation Army, Calcutta, Rayan’s International School, Mumbai, Woodstock International School, Mussoorie, YMCA, New Delhi, etc. Apart from the Indian Classical Sitar, his main instrument, he also plays the Piano, Tabla, Harmonium, and Guitar. Studies in other subjects include a Bachelors Degree in English Language, English Literature and Sociology, and two years of Electrical Engineering. He has served as music teacher at a number of well known institutions which include Satyaniketan, Allahabad; Girls High School, Allahabad; Frank Anthony Public School; New Delhi; Father Agnel School, New Delhi; Faith Academy, New Delhi; Uma Sharma’s School of Music and Dance, New Delhi; Woodstock International School, Mussoorie and the Allahabad Agricultural Deemed University as Assistant Prof. and Head of the Music Dept.
