Contact Now| Suman Bhattacharya is one of the finest new generation Sitar players, based at Bangalore, India. Suman started receiving talim (training) in Hindustani Classical Music (vocal) at a tender age of five years from his aunt Late Smt. Sucheta Bhattacharya and his father Sri Bidyut Bhattacharya. Later he started learning Sitar from Sri Bimal Chatterjee of Imdadkhani Gharana (senior disciple of Pt. Kashinath Mukherjee and close associate of Ustad Bilayat Khan). He learnt the art of Sitar playing in a number of styles (including the Tantrakari and the famous Gayaki Ang style of Ustad Vilayat Khan). After learning Sitar for more than 15 years, his characteristic style includes slow yet colourful alap, rhythmic and energetic Jod & Jhala, Masitkhani Vilambit gats, Razakhani and Vilayat Khani madhyalaya and drut baaz, fast jhala, etc. His techniques include 5 note meends, gamaks, 3 ocatve spanning ekhara sapat, palta and chhut tans that truly portrays his awe inspiring mastery on Sitar. He also learnt vocal music from Pt. Kalyan Basu, senior discople of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of Patiala Gharana. He has performed in front of many veterans and renowned musicians of the age and has received valuable guidance from them. An All India Radio artist, he has performed at many occasions and locations in and around Kolkata. He is also involved in spreading Indian classical music amongst the younger generation both in India and abroad. Academically he is a Master of Computer Applications. |
